The exceptional rhythm section of German pianist Tino Derado and the Americans Paul Imm on bass and Alan Jones on drums will give 2 workshops at the KWU aimed at developing student musicians’ awareness of the roles of the soloist and rhythm section, offering the unique experience to both soloists and singers as well as rhythm section players of playing with one of the most musical, spontaneous and supportive rhythm sections working in jazz in the 21st Century. The workshops are open to all students of the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität.

TINO DERADO (piano), a native German, graduated from the Berklee College of Music (Boston) and the New School (New York). In the course of his brief but remarkable career, Tino has performed with Gary Burton, Peter Erskine, Paul Winter, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Cliff, Craig Handy, Billy Drewes, Matthew Garrison, Rebekka Bakken, Nils Landgren, Papo Vasquez, Orlando Marin y su Orchestra, Andy Gonzales as well as Bob Moses, to name but a few, served as musical director for Gloria Gaynor, was finalist at the Fish Middleton Jazz Scholarship Competition, and toured extensively with various bands in Europe, South America, Russia and the Middle East. Mr. Derado has lived the last 12 years in New York and has now moved back to Berlin/Germany. He is currently signed by Sunnyside Records and is frequently working with the NDR Big Band Hamburg.

PAUL IMM (bass) has performed throughout the world with jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Charlie Rouse, Eddie Harris, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Tom Harrell, Kenny Werner and Jim Pepper, among others. Paul is very active as a sideman in Europe on many projects and performances and he has recorded with Kenny Werner, Tom Harrell, Stephane Belmondo Quartet, Yusef Lateef, Markus Becker and Peter Bolte. He studied with David Baker at the University of Indiana and currently resides in Hamburg, Germany.

ALAN JONES (drums) has performed extensively throughout Europe and North America with Charlie Mariano, David Liebman, Jim Pepper, Bennie Wallace, Don Thompson, Glen Moore, Kenny Wheeler, Mose Allison and David Friesen among others. He has recorded with Dave Holland, Ralph Towner, Jim Pepper, David Friesen, Renee Rosnes, Wayne Darling, Airto Moriera, and The Alan Jones Sextet (produced by Gino Vannelli).
Mr. Jones studied jazz at the Berklee School of Music as well as the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, currently resides in Portland, Oregon and is the founder and artistic director of the Alan Jones Academy of Music.
