Toon Roos

With his lyrical, intuitive and well-balanced style of playing Bird Award winner Toon Roos (1964, the Netherlands) is considered to be one of the finest tenor and soprano saxophonists on today's contemporary jazz scene. Since the start of his career in 1984 Toon has worked with jazz greats such as Toots Thielemans, Hein Van de Geyn, Joe Zawinul, Peter Erskine, John Scofield, Alex Acuna, Ivan Lins, The Metropole Orkest and Steely Dan. Toon has developed his own lyrical sound by playing different styles of music, from the big band swing tradition to bebop and hardbop, from bossa nova to pop, funk and fusion. Toon is also an award-winning composer, conservatory teacher and producer of his own albums. He has performed as a bandleader, sideman and band member with many Dutch straight-ahead jazz and fusion groups and international artists. He played in most European countries, as well as in the United States, South Africa, Mexico, the Caribbean and China. Toon was a member of the renowned Dutch Jazz Orchestra for more than twenty years. In 1984 Toon won the Wessel Ilcken Prijs, an encouragement prize for young jazz talents in the Netherlands. In 2001 Toon won the prestigious Bird Award of the North Sea Jazz Festival. Toon's composition Reach for the Rose won second prize at the 2004 International Songwriting Composition in the US. Toon was invited by keyboard legend Joe Zawinul to perform together at the North Sea Jazz Festival of 2005 and also that year at Joe Zawinul’s Birdland in Vienna. In 2009 the Toon Roos Quartet was invited by Steely Dan’s co-founder Walter Becker to open nine shows of Steely Dan on their European tour, playing large venues such as the Hammersmith Apollo in London and the Olympia in Paris. Toon released his CD/DVD Angel Dance in 2011 featuring drum legend Peter Erskine, a well received album with lyrical, funky jazz in original compositions. Recently Toon performs as guest soloist in different settings and as leader of his own jazz and fusion groups - his acoustic ‘standards' quartet and his electric funky band with original songs by Toon and pianist Karel Boehlee. Toon also teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and at the Conservatory of Utrecht. Quote from Peter Erskine: ’Toon is one of the few saxophone players in the world with a sound of their own.’
