Joe Zawinul Prize of the MUK

Breaking the rules

The MUK dedicates the Joe Zawinul Prize of the MUK to Joe Zawinul, one of its most famous alumni. This with € 3000,— endowed prize is awarded annually in the form of a project scholarship to a MUK student and enables the realization of a jazz project that is dedicated to crossing musical boundaries or is characterized by high musical innovation.

A jury consisting of MUK-experts, a representative of the Zawinul Foundation for Achievement and external jury members, chaired by Prof. Lars Seniuk, decides on the awarding of the prize.

Conditions of participation

All active students at the MUK are allowed to apply.

Application documents
Complete applications must be submitted to by 15 September 2020 and include the following documents:

  • Meaningful description of the submitted project with explanations on its feasibility (e. g. audio samples/scores of the presented project, time schedule, etc.)
  • Vita of the participating artist(s)
  • Press photo
  • Demo recordings (link to audio or video, total length 10 to 15 minutes). These only serve as a quality check and need not necessarily have anything to do with the submitted project.


  • Submission deadline: 15 September 2020
  • Announcement of the prize winner: October 2020
  • Award ceremony: 13 November 2020, VOLLPENSION at the MUK
  • The implementation of the award-winning project must be completed by the end of October 2021.

The prize winner is obliged to make a short artistic contribution at the award ceremony in November 2020 and to present the award-winning project in November of the following year at the next Joe Zawinul Prize award ceremony at the MUK.
