§ 8 Senate (as per articles of association, section 3)

(1) The Senate has a three-year term of office and is made up of the following members according to the electoral regulations:
a) six university professors, who are elected from the entirety of university professors every three years;
b) two representatives of the lecturers, who are elected from the entirety of lecturers every three years;
b) two representatives of the administration, who are elected from the entirety of administrative employees every three years;
d) two students, who are appointed by the Students' Representative Council. The students nominated to the Senate cannot be appointed to any other committee / organ of the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

(2) The chairperson of the Senate is elected from the Senate members as per the electoral regulations. The chairperson of the Senate has the right to participate in all Senate votes.

(3) The Senate convenes at least once a month except during lecture breaks; they also convene when the vice-chancellor’s office or at least one-third of the Senate members requests it.

(4) The Senate has the following duties:
a) Issuing of rules of procedure for the Senate, approval by the vice-chancellor’s office;
b) Appointment of half of the members of the University Council (see § 5, Paragraph 1); if a senate-appointed member withdraws from the University Council before the end of the term of office, the Senate has the right to nominate a replacement member within a reasonable period of time;
c) Position statement to the tender specifications to find a vice-chancellor from the general assembly of Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien GmbH (see § 6 Paragraph 2 lit. a);
d) Decision about objections to rejection decisions of the Director of Studies;
e) Appointment of the Women’s Representative, the Disabilities Representative and the Ombudsperson at the suggestion of the Task Force for Equal Treatment Issues and decision about proposals made by the Task Force for Equal Treatment Issues;
f) Appointment of members for the electoral commission as per the electoral regulations;
g) Discussion and drafting of proposals for the further development of the Privatuniversität, including the approval of strategic recommendations for the use of personnel and financial resources giving special consideration to securing the quality of studies across all faculties to present to the vice-chancellor’s office;
h) Drafting of proposals to amend the articles of association to present to the University Council after a position statement is made by the vice-chancellor’s office;
i) Position statement on the implementation and dissolution of institutes and on the rectorate’s guidelines for the senate as per § 7 Paragraph 5 lit. f to present to the vice-chancellor’s office;
j) Position statement on proposals by the vice-chancellor’s office to amend the articles of association to present to the University Council;
j) Position statement on the multi-year objective and performance agreements (medium-term planning) of the vice-chancellor’s office to present to the University Council;
l) Position statement on the proposal by the vice-chancellor to appoint a deputy vice-chancellor (§ 6 Paragraph 3 lit. a) to the general assembly;
m) Position statement on the proposals of the Studies and Research Commissions, specifically relating to degree programmes, to present to the vice-chancellor’s office;
n) Position statement on the filling of positions in the appointment committees and evaluation committees (see appointment regulation); the Senate has the right to appoint a member to participate without voting rights in all appointment and evaluation proceedings;
o) Proposal for issuing implementing provisions relating to the Study and Examination Regulation to the vice-chancellor’s office;
p) Approval for the appointment of honorary senators at the suggestion of the vice-chancellor’s office;
q) Position statement on the appointment, reappointment and dismissal of the director of studies;
r) Ruling in study matters in the second instance.

(5) The Senate can establish committees and panels to make decisions and provide consultation for individual duties.

(6) The Senate can invite members of the vice-chancellor’s office to provide information to make decisions and provide consultation for individual duties.
