Youth Development at the MUK

In accordance its participatory focus, the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna makes sustainable contributions to supporting young musicians in Vienna and Austria. Specially developed programmes, working in collaboration with music schools and youth competitions (prima la musica, Jugend musiziert, EMCY — European Union of Music Competitions for Youth) support gifted music students on the cusp of a professional music education.

In addition to this, the MUK also develops services in the fields of informal learning, community music and music communication for special target groups in the urban surroundings, working in cooperation with non-university institutions.

#MUK — Preparatory courses

Do you already know that you want to study an instrument or dance? Then you’ve come to the right place with us: The MUK offers preparatory courses for virtually all instrumental studies (except the Jazz degree) and dance degrees. This provides young talent, up to the age of 18, with training that will prepare them for continuing on to a Bachelor’s degree course at the MUK.

If you are interested, please request more information from the Student Affairs Office by emailing studieninfo@muk.ac.at or calling +43 1 512 77 47-200.

#MUK – So very close!

In cooperation with the Stadtschulrat Wien, the MUK offers instrument presentations and concerts for school classes, spanning all instrument groups and genres.

Instrument presentation for school classes

In the melting.pot series of concerts, students of the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna present entertaining programmes, spanning all instrument groups and genres – ideal for young music lovers and enthusiasts as well as those who want to get more involved. To further awaken this curiosity, the MUK offers the opportunity of an introductory instrument presentation, tailored to school classes (before the morning concerts). In line with the motto “MUK – So very close!”, young people obtain what is often their first contact with orchestral instruments in a real concert environment

approx. 15 minutes before the start of each morning concert.
Please note, you must register in good time for this opportunity!

Please contact Arno Steinwider-Johannsen for more information and to register at
a.steinwider-johannsen@muk.ac.at or on +43 664 606 47 440.

“We must always share what we can, what we wish and what we achieve. That is how it should be! (…) If existence, work, endeavours are to have any meaning whatsoever, we must go further, never forgetting and despairing. We must share our opportunities with everyone.”
Hans Werner Henze, Composer and Animatore Culturale (1926—2012)
