Mission Statement

The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) gathers musicians and performing artists from all over the world giving them the opportunity to artistic development in an open and innovative atmosphere. The constant cooperation with domestic and foreign partners is part of its self-concept. On the basis of the rich Viennese art tradition students, lecturers and management collectively establish access to music and performing arts. They spread their works and expertise worldwide in the awareness of the strength and the responsibility of the cultural creator in a world increasingly threatened by economic restraints. Thereby artistic excellence and scientific/educational awareness merge into a future-oriented institutional profile.

The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna is an autonomous university for music and performing arts, understanding itself as an essential part of the educational and cultural offers of Vienna with long-term positioning and general acknowledgement. The advancement and the appreciation of the arts through the alliance of research and teaching are considered central objectives, whereat the comprehensive training of the student’s individual personality on the basis of an exceptional talent has essential importance.  

Lecturers and students work closely together in one-to-one or group classes, teams and ensembles applying the principles of active participation, joint responsibility and codetermination.

Teaching and appreciation of the arts concentrate on the following competence criteria:
-    interpretation and creation
-    science and research
-    intermediation and participation  

The access to the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna for students as well as for lecturers is highly selective in terms of artistic aptitude, professional competence and personal commitment.

The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna offers a variety of study programmes. Thus traditional art forms are made accessible and contemporary as well as visionary increments of the established art education concept are explored in the way of interdisciplinary cooperation. The international competitiveness is a fundamental principle in all represented art forms.

Students at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna can expect support according to their unique skills and personal visions in order to build a professional identity based on the acquired competences during their studies. The vital relation between research, teaching and practice is secured by numerous events organized by the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna independently and/or in cooperation with distinguished cultural institutions as well as by the national and international artistic activities of lecturers and students. In conscious perception of the academic and non-academic environment cooperation deserves considerable significance.
The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna renounces the creation of academic hierarchy levels and aims to develop a relationship between students, lecturers and management characterized by mutual esteem and acceptance.
